May through September brings the warmest weather and the longest days, best for exploring Riga on foot, the Jūrmala coastline, and Gauja National Park. Winters are cold and dark, though Riga's Christmas markets and snow-covered Old Town have their own appeal.
Riga's Old Town is compact and walkable, but destinations outside the capital — Gauja National Park, Rundāle Palace, Kuldīga, Jūrmala, Liepāja — are spread across the country with limited public transit, making a private driver the practical way to see them in one trip.
Summers are mild (18-22°C / 64-72°F) with occasional warm spells; the Baltic Sea stays cool for swimming even in July and August. A light jacket is useful even in summer, and proper cold-weather gear is essential outside the warmer months.
Latvia uses the euro. Card payment is widely accepted, even in smaller towns, and tipping around 10% at restaurants is appreciated but not strictly required.
Riga's Art Nouveau district, centered on Alberta and Elizabetes streets, is easy to miss if you stick only to the medieval Old Town — it's a short walk beyond the Old Town's edge and holds one of the densest concentrations of the style in Europe.
