Kensington Market and Chinatown walking tour: sample route

This is a sample route, not a fixed schedule. Voyzo's description of the walk names the stops but not their order; this sample lists them in one possible order, and we confirm the route, the finish and the pace by email. No stop has a time set on this page.

  1. Start

    Meet at Campbell House Museum

The walk starts at Campbell House Museum, 160 Queen Street West, at Queen Street West and University Avenue, beside Osgoode subway station. The calendar offers hourly starts from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM; we confirm your exact time and the transport to the start by email.

  2. On foot

Past the Art Gallery of Ontario and into Chinatown

The walk passes the outside of the Art Gallery of Ontario, 317 Dundas Street West, and continues into Chinatown, whose BIA area runs along Spadina Avenue and Dundas Street West. The Chinatown BIA dates the community to the late 1870s and says residents moved to Dundas Street West after the new City Hall was built. The gallery is not entered on this walk.

  3. Stop 1

    Kensington Market

The Kensington Market BIA lies west of Spadina Avenue between Dundas Street and College Street, and Parks Canada lists the market as a National Historic Site of Canada. Its streets were laid out over the Denison family's Bellevue Estate, first developed in 1815, and Destination Toronto recommends it for vintage clothing and street food and notes its specialty grocers, bakeries and cheese shops. Food is not included, so you buy your own.

  4. Last stop

    The Kiever Shul

The Kiever Synagogue, 25 Bellevue Avenue, has twin domed towers and is often described as Byzantine in style, and it was finished by 1927, according to the Ontario Jewish Archives; in 1979 it was the first building of Jewish significance in Ontario designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. We confirm what can be seen on your date. The walk ends near Kensington Market.

  5. After

    Transport from the finish

Voyzo arranges your transport from the finish, and we confirm the pickup details for the end of the walk by email. Any food you buy in Kensington Market is at your own expense.

Cancellation and changes

You can cancel up to 24 hours before your tour date, and a cancellation made less than 24 hours before your tour date is not refunded. Your booking confirmation carries the cancellation terms that apply; section 7 of our Terms and Conditions covers cancellations. A booking needs at least 24 hours' notice. To cancel or change your date, email info@voyzo.com before the 24-hour cutoff; we will try to reschedule, subject to availability. Section 10 of the Terms and Conditions describes how independent operators fit in.

How booking works
  1. Choose your group size, date and start time. We need at least 24 hours' notice.
  2. Send your request. The calendar's Book now button sends a request rather than a confirmed booking.
  3. Share your wishes. Put dietary needs, mobility needs, children's ages and any time you must finish by in the message box of the quote form on this page, or email info@voyzo.com.
  4. Receive your confirmation. Once we confirm availability by email, we send your exact time and meeting or pickup details ahead of the tour.
How the hours work

The price covers a private walking tour of 2 hours. The booking calendar shows one price per group size and has no length option. If you want more than 2 hours, tell us by email to info@voyzo.com or in the quote form on this page before you book, and we confirm whether it is possible and the total in your booking confirmation. This page gives no price for extra time.

Who runs your tour

You book with Voyzo FZ-LLC, and Voyzo remains your point of contact for booking, pricing and support: info@voyzo.com.

Some private tours run on the vehicles and drivers of Voyzo's affiliated Canadian operating company; other tours, such as flights, boat rides and attraction visits, are run by independent operators, all professionally licensed and insured.

A private guide leads this walk on foot, and Voyzo arranges vehicle transport to the start and from the finish. This page does not say which company employs the guide or runs the transport, so ask us before you book.

The route and what you see

The walk starts at Campbell House Museum, passes the outside of the Art Gallery of Ontario, goes through Chinatown and Kensington Market and takes in the Kiever Shul, in about 2 hours. The order on this page is a sample and we confirm the route and the pace by email. This page does not promise that anyone goes inside Campbell House, the gallery or the synagogue; we confirm what can be seen and entered on your date.

Admission and extras

Admission to Campbell House Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario and any other place is not included in the price, and neither are food, drinks or gratuities. Campbell House admits visitors by guided tour only and is closed on Sundays, Mondays and from 22 December to 31 January (checked 29 October 2026). If you want to go inside a place, tell us when you book and we confirm whether it fits the walk and the timing.

Accessibility

At Campbell House Museum only the ground floor is step-free, through the rear door, and there is no elevator (the museum's website, checked 29 October 2026). We have not published a step-free description of the pavements and crossings on the route and do not state a walking distance. If anyone in your group uses a wheelchair, walker or stroller, or finds long walks hard, tell us before you book and we confirm what is possible; questions go to info@voyzo.com.

Children

This page states no minimum age for the walk. Tell us your children's ages in the quote form on this page or by email to info@voyzo.com, and we confirm the details. If your group goes inside Campbell House Museum, its website lists free admission for children 12 and under (checked 29 October 2026); admission is not included in the tour price.

Food and dietary needs

No food or drink is included in the price. Destination Toronto recommends Kensington Market for vintage clothing and street food and notes its specialty grocers, bakeries and cheese shops, so you can buy your own as you walk. What to bring and the weather

The whole route is outdoors, so wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. At the Toronto (City) climate station the 1991 to 2020 normal daily maximum in January is -0.3 degrees Celsius and the minimum is -6.7 degrees (Environment and Climate Change Canada, checked 29 October 2026). If you would rather make your own way, tell us when you book.

Is the tour private, or will other travellers join?

No. Admission to Campbell House Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario and any other place is not included. Ask us before you book whether a visit can be added to your walk.

Is food included, and can you handle dietary needs?

No food or drink is included in the price. Destination Toronto recommends Kensington Market for vintage clothing and street food and notes its specialty grocers, bakeries and cheese shops, so you can buy your own as you walk. This page states no season for this walk, and the whole route is outdoors, so dress for the weather. Toronto's normal January high is -0.3 degrees Celsius and the normal low is -6.7 degrees (Environment and Climate Change Canada, 1991 to 2020). Campbell House Museum is closed from 22 December to 31 January. This page states no weather rule, so ask us before you book what happens in extreme conditions.

What is Kensington Market known for?

Destination Toronto recommends Kensington Market for vintage clothing and street food and notes its specialty grocers, bakeries and cheese shops. It lies west of Spadina Avenue, between Dundas Street and College Street.

What is the history of Toronto's Chinatown?

The Toronto Chinatown BIA dates the community to the late 1870s, when the first Chinese business, a laundry at 9 Adelaide Street East, opened, and says early residents settled on Elizabeth Street. Demolition for the new City Hall cut that area by about two-thirds, and residents later moved to Dundas Street West after land prices rose. The BIA gives no exact year for the move.

What is the Kiever Synagogue on the route?

The Kiever Synagogue, also called the Kiever Shul, is at 25 Bellevue Avenue, and the Canadian Register of Historic Places names it as part of the character of the Kensington Market district. The Ontario Jewish Archives says it was designed by Benjamin Swartz, has twin domed towers and is often described as Byzantine in style, was finished by 1927 and in 1979 became the first building of Jewish significance in Ontario designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.

How do I book, and what is the cancellation rule?

This sends a request, and nothing is confirmed until we confirm availability by email. You can cancel up to 24 hours before your tour date, and section 7 of our Terms and Conditions covers cancellations; the terms that apply arrive with your booking confirmation.

Can I change the route, add stops or make the tour longer?

Ask us. The calendar sells this 2-hour route at set prices and has no length option, so for a longer walk, a different plan or more than 56 guests, request a custom quote by email or in the form on this page, and we confirm whether it is possible and the total. This page gives no price for extra time.

How does a private walk compare with a shared tour or walking it myself?

A private walk is for your group only, at a set total from US$1,499 for 1 to 4 guests, with a private guide on a set route; Voyzo arranges transport to the start and from the finish. A shared tour is sold per person and can cost less for one or two travellers. Walking it yourself has no tour fee, but you plan the route and each entry. About the Kensington Market and Chinatown walk

This walk is for groups who want Chinatown and Kensington Market in one private outing, with a guide to put each in context. The two areas meet at Spadina Avenue: the Chinatown BIA's area runs along Spadina Avenue between College Street and Sullivan Street and along Dundas Street West, and the City of Toronto's list places the Kensington Market BIA west of Spadina Avenue between Dundas Street and College Street. The Art Gallery of Ontario is passed from the outside, and Campbell House Museum is where the walk begins.

The walk is outdoors in every season. Campbell House Museum is closed on Sundays, Mondays and from 22 December to 31 January, so its interior cannot be visited then, and the hours of shops and cafés on the route are set by each business. Admission, food and gratuities are not included, and we confirm by email what can be seen on your date.

Campbell House, where this walk starts, was built in 1822 for Sir William Campbell, Chief Justice of Upper Canada, and its museum describes it as the oldest surviving building from the Town of York. In 1972 it was moved from Adelaide Street to Queen Street to save it from demolition; the Advocates' Society, a group of lawyers, raised the money to save it and open it as a museum (Campbell House Museum website, checked 29 October 2026).

The Toronto Chinatown BIA dates the community to the late 1870s, when the first Chinese business, a laundry at 9 Adelaide Street East, opened, and says early residents settled on Elizabeth Street. Demolition for the new City Hall cut that area by about two-thirds, and the BIA says residents later moved to Dundas Street West after land prices rose. The BIA's area today runs along Spadina Avenue between College Street and Sullivan Street and along Dundas Street West (BIA website, checked 29 October 2026).

Parks Canada says Kensington Market's streets were laid out over the Denison family's Bellevue Estate, first developed in 1815, and that the area later housed successive waves of immigrants; it is a National Historic Site of Canada. The Canadian Register of Historic Places says Jewish immigrants arrived in the early 20th century, post-war immigration brought people from Eastern Europe, Portugal and Italy, and in the 1960s Afro-Caribbean, Chinese and East Indian businesspeople opened shops. The Ontario Jewish Archives says the Kiever Synagogue at 25 Bellevue Avenue, designed by Benjamin Swartz, was finished by 1927 and in 1979 became the first building of Jewish significance in Ontario designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.
