The Stone Magazine and Brick Magazine are not wheelchair accessible, the Strachan Avenue cemetery path is packed gravel, and restored walls, ditches and dry moats may not be accessible (checked 29 October 2026). Tell us your children's ages, by email to info@voyzo.com or in the quote form on this page, and we confirm by email whether the tour suits them.
What to bring and the weather
Fort York is mainly outdoors, so dress for the day's weather and wear shoes for walking and some stairs. Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Toronto City station give an average daily high of 8.1 degrees Celsius in November, 2.6 in December and -0.3 in January, with average lows of 2.3, -2.7 and -6.7. | Choose it if | You want 2 hours of the fort and its history for your group alone, at a time we confirm | You want a short, free introduction | You want to wander at your own pace |
The City's free tour and a visit on your own cost nothing, so for one or two travellers who want only a 45-minute introduction they are the better value. The private tour costs a group total from US$1,499 and what you buy is 2 hours for your group alone at a time we confirm; it makes most sense for a group sharing the total, for a family, or for guests who want more time than the City's tour gives.

On 27 April 1813 American forces advanced on York. The US National Park Service gives the American force as some 2,700 men with 85 cannon against a British force of 750 with twelve cannon. The Legislative Assembly of Ontario says the Americans aimed to capture the warship Sir Isaac Brock, then under construction, and that British troops, local militia and First Nations allies were overwhelmed. The tour covers this history on site.
Why did the British destroy their own powder magazine at Fort York?
The City of Toronto says the British command decided on 27 April 1813 to destroy the fort's gunpowder magazine rather than let it fall into enemy hands, and that the explosion tore through the advancing American columns. Casualty figures differ by source: the US National Park Service says about 250 Americans were killed or wounded, including General Zebulon Pike, while a Veterans Affairs Canada plaque text gives 38 killed and 222 wounded.

The City of Toronto says seven of Fort York's eight historic buildings, all built from 1813 to 1815, still stand, including two blockhouses among the oldest buildings in Toronto. About the Private Fort York National Historic Site Tour
Fort York is a City of Toronto museum site whose present buildings were put up between 1813 and 1815, after the Battle of York of 27 April 1813. This private tour is for groups that want the buildings and that history covered for their group alone over 2 hours, rather than in the City's free 45-minute guided tour.
Because the visit is mainly outdoors, the season and the weather shape it. The City of Toronto's page lists one set of public hours and names no seasonal closure, while our booking calendar also offers start times outside those hours; we confirm by email what is open on your date, so if you want the buildings open for the full 2 hours, choose a Wednesday-to-Sunday start between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Toronto time; we confirm your Toronto start time by email before the tour.
Fort York is a City of Toronto museum site at 250 Fort York Blvd. The US National Park Service says defences at York were established in 1793 under orders of Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe, and that as tension with the United States grew in 1811 Major General Isaac Brock strengthened the fort with a wall and a circular battery. The City adds that many nations lived and gathered on this land before the British settlement of 1793.
On 27 April 1813 American forces advanced on York. The National Park Service gives the American force as some 2,700 men with 85 cannon against a British force of 750 with twelve cannon, and the Legislative Assembly of Ontario says British troops, local militia and First Nations allies were overwhelmed. The City says the British command decided to destroy the fort's gunpowder magazine rather than let it fall into enemy hands. Casualty figures differ by source.
Parks Canada records the designation of Fort York as a National Historic Site of Canada on 25 May 1923 and says the present buildings were erected between 1813 and 1815 to replace those destroyed during the American occupations of York. The City bought the fort in 1909, and a plaque says it was restored between 1932 and 1934; the City says seven of the eight historic buildings still stand. This private tour of 2 hours covers those buildings and this history for your group alone, and the City's own free guided tours last 45 minutes.
