Tickets and admission
In its holiday-season notice of 22 December 2025 the City of Toronto said Riverdale Farm admission is free. Mount Pleasant Group publishes the Toronto Necropolis gate hours and lists no entry fee. Both statements were checked on 29 October 2026. We confirm by email that no other ticket applies to your route. Gratuities, meals and snacks are not included in the price.
The Toronto Necropolis
Mount Pleasant Group runs the Toronto Necropolis, at 200 Winchester Street, as a working cemetery that still offers burial plots. Keep to the paths, speak quietly and give any service in progress its space. We confirm by email whether the walk enters the cemetery. We confirm any rule on guided groups or photography that applies to your group by email.
Riverdale Farm: rules and winter conditions
The City of Toronto asks visitors not to feed the animals and does not allow dogs, bicycles, in-line skates, foot scooters, ride toys or vehicles on the farm. Public washrooms are on the ground floor of the Simpson House and in the Meeting House. In winter the City clears paths to all animal paddocks, closes and does not clear the trails at the lower end of the property and some stairs, and keeps a warming area in the Simpson House (checked 29 October 2026). We confirm by email whether the walk enters the farm.
Accessibility
We do not promise a step-free route: the distance, slopes, stairs and surfaces of the walk are confirmed by email. The Toronto Necropolis lies on the west slope of the Don Valley, according to the University of Toronto Libraries. At Riverdale Farm the City lists wheelchair access on the north side of the Simpson House, and in winter some stairs and trails are closed. If anyone in your group has mobility needs, tell us before you book, by email to info@voyzo.com or in the quote form on this page, and we confirm by email what can be arranged.
Children, strollers and dogs
Tell us your children's ages in your request, by email to info@voyzo.com or in the quote form on this page. No age limit is published for Riverdale Farm or the Toronto Necropolis, and none is set for this walk. The City's farm page does not mention strollers, and it does not allow dogs, foot scooters or ride toys. We confirm the details for your group by email.
What to bring and the weather
The walk is outdoors for 2 hours, so dress for the weather and wear shoes for sidewalks that may be wet or icy in winter. Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Toronto (City) station show an average daily high of 8.1 degrees Celsius in November, 2.6 in December and -0.3 in January, with an average January low of -6.7, and a July high of 27.0. Toronto Pearson's snowfall normals are 24.1 cm in December and 31.5 cm in January. These are long-run averages, not a forecast. We confirm by email what happens in heavy rain, snow or extreme cold, so ask before you book.
Photography and privacy
Most houses on the route are private homes, and the Cabbagetown Preservation Association says the area's character shows from the sidewalk: facades, gardens, fences and streetscapes. Photograph the homes from the public street and ask before photographing people. We confirm by email any photography rule at the Toronto Necropolis or Riverdale Farm that applies to your group.
Group size
The calendar sells groups of 1 to 56 guests, with one total per group size. We confirm by email how many guests one guide leads on residential streets and how the transport works for a large group, so tell us your final group size when you book.

Why is it called Cabbagetown?
According to the Cabbagetown Preservation Association, a community heritage group, the name dates from the 1840s, when newly arrived Irish immigrants grew vegetables, mostly cabbages, in their front gardens. Wealthier residents of other parts of Toronto called the area Cabbagetown. That is the association's account of the name; the walk itself is story-led and focused on local history.
What will we see on the Cabbagetown walk?
Stops include Riverdale Farm and the Toronto Necropolis, and the walk covers Cabbagetown's Victorian streets, laneways and gardens. The Cabbagetown Preservation Association says most of the houses were built in the 1880s and 1890s and names the Bay & Gable house, tall and narrow with a bay window and a pointed front gable, as the quintessential Cabbagetown house. We confirm the route and the order of the stops by email.

The City of Toronto said in its holiday-season notice of 22 December 2025 that Riverdale Farm would be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and that admission is free. The City's farm page lists no hours or fee, and we found no notice for winter 2026-27 (checked 29 October 2026), so we confirm the farm's hours for your date. Dogs, bicycles, in-line skates, foot scooters, ride toys and vehicles are not allowed.
When is the Toronto Necropolis open, and who is buried there?
Mount Pleasant Group, which runs the Toronto Necropolis at 200 Winchester Street, lists gate hours of 8:00 am to 8:00 pm from 1 April to 31 October and 8:00 am to 5:30 pm from 1 November to 31 March. It is a working cemetery, so we ask groups to keep to the paths and speak quietly.

About the Cabbagetown walking tour
This walk is for visitors who want to understand one Toronto neighbourhood on foot rather than tick off the city's main sights. It is private for your group only, at a relaxed, story-led pace, and it starts in Cabbagetown. Destination Toronto lists Cabbagetown among the neighbourhoods of Old Town, which it calls the historic centre of Toronto.
The walk is outdoors for the full 2 hours, so the season shapes it. Riverdale Farm and the Toronto Necropolis set their own hours, the farm's lower trails and some stairs are closed in winter, and the Necropolis gate closes at 5:30 pm from 1 November. The dated table in the Itinerary section lists the sources, and we confirm the route for your date by email.
Cabbagetown's name dates from the 1840s, according to the Cabbagetown Preservation Association, when newly arrived Irish immigrants grew vegetables, mostly cabbages, in their front gardens and wealthier residents of other parts of Toronto called the area Cabbagetown. The same association says most of the houses were built in the 1880s and 1890s and names the Bay & Gable style, tall and narrow with a bay window and a pointed front gable, as the quintessential Cabbagetown house. The association also says Cabbagetown has one of the densest collections of original Victorian homes in North America, and the City's by-law 110-02 of 2002 covers the Cabbagetown-Metcalfe Heritage Conservation District.
Riverdale Farm is a City of Toronto working farm of 7.5 acres, with wooded areas, ponds and butterfly, herb, flower and vegetable gardens. The City says it bought the land for Riverdale Park in 1856, that the Riverdale Zoo opened there in 1894 as Toronto's first zoo and closed in 1974, when its animals moved to the new Metro Toronto Zoo, and that the farm officially opened on 9 September 1978. Three zoo buildings remain: the Donnybrook ruin, Island House in the lower pond and the Resident Zookeeper's House, built in 1902 by prisoners of the Toronto Don Jail, which also served as a temporary morgue for the Necropolis Cemetery.
The Toronto Necropolis, at 200 Winchester Street, has served the city since 1850, according to Mount Pleasant Group, which runs it and points to fine examples of High Victorian Gothic among its buildings. The University of Toronto Libraries' Don River Valley Historical Mapping Project says it was the city's second non-sectarian cemetery, after Potter's Field at Yonge and Bloor, and that in 1855 the remains of 984 people were moved there from Potter's Field. Mount Pleasant Group names William Lyon Mackenzie, Toronto's first mayor, George Brown, John Ross Robertson, Jack Layton, Anderson Ruffin Abbott and Ned Hanlan among those buried there, and a monument to Samuel Lount and Peter Matthews, hanged in 1838 for their roles in the Mackenzie Rebellion.
